Landscaping in Katoomba
Landscaping built for Katoomba’s steep, sandstone, frost-prone blocks — from cool-climate gardens to structural retaining walls. 20% off this spring and summer.

Katoomba sits near the very top of the Blue Mountains, around a thousand metres up, and gardening here is nothing like gardening on the coastal plain. Winters are genuinely cold, frost is normal, and a lot of blocks fall away toward the escarpment with sandstone sitting close to the surface. We’ve built for those conditions for years, so we plan every Katoomba garden around the slope, the aspect and the cold before we plant a thing.
Because so much of Katoomba is steep, a big part of our work here is structural — retaining walls to turn drop-away blocks into usable terraces, proper drainage so water doesn’t sheet down onto the house, and sandstone and timber work that suits the local character. Streets running off the ridge toward Katoomba Falls and Echo Point are some of the trickiest we work on, and they’re exactly the sort of block we’re set up for.
For planting we stick to cool-climate and hardy species that shrug off frost and cope with shade from tall eucalypts and neighbouring homes. Lawns get the same treatment — the right turf for a cold, part-shaded yard, or premium artificial grass where a real lawn was never going to thrive. The result is a Katoomba garden that looks good year-round and doesn’t fight the climate.
What makes Katoomba different
- High and cold. At roughly 1,000m, Katoomba gets real frosts and cold snaps — plant selection and lawn choice have to handle it.
- Steep, escarpment blocks. Land falling toward the Jamison Valley means retaining, terracing and drainage are the backbone of most builds here.
- Sandstone underfoot. Rock close to the surface shapes what’s possible — we work with it for walls and features rather than fighting it.
- Heritage and tourism character. As the city’s main centre, Katoomba gardens often want a natural, sandstone-and-bush look that suits the streetscape.

Learn moreCommon questions in Katoomba
Do you handle very steep Katoomba blocks?
Yes — steep, drop-away blocks are our bread and butter up here. We design retaining and terracing to create flat, usable areas and make sure drainage is sorted so water is directed safely away from the house and slope.
What plants actually survive a Katoomba winter?
We lean on cool-climate and frost-hardy species — natives and exotics that handle the cold, wind and shade at this elevation. We choose for year-round interest so the garden isn’t bare through winter.
Can you build with local sandstone?
Absolutely. Sandstone walls, steps and features suit Katoomba’s character and the ground here, and we use it regularly for both structural and decorative work.
